About Essaray Hockey

I founded Essaray Hockey in 2026. I grew up in Ballston Spa, NY playing youth hockey throughout the Capital Region before going on to play juniors in the NAHL, NCDC and CCHL. From there I went on to attend and play NCAA Hockey at Hamilton College in the NESCAC.

During my time at Hamilton I had the opportunity to intern with the Hockey Analytics Department of the St. Louis Blues where I was involved in amateur scouting, professional scouting and contract negotiation preparation. In my final years at Hamilton I began consulting for the Nanaimo Clippers of the BCHL helping them to a Coastal Conference Championship before falling to the Penticton Vees in the Fred Page Cup.

After graduation I moved to the West Coast where I worked as a Regional Scout and Manager of Hockey Operations for 85 Sports Management. At the same time I was coaching the UCLA Bruins ACHA program and led the team to Western Regionals in all three of my seasons there. I then took an assistant coaching position with Trine Thunder in the NCHA where the program reached as high as number seven in the country and made a run to the NCAA Elite Eight.

Most recently I served as an Assistant Coach at SUNY Cortland where the Red Dragons reached the SUNYAC Semi-Finals. I started Essaray Hockey to bring everything I have learned as a player and coach back to where it all began and give kids in this region a place to grow the game the right way.

Philosophy

My inspiration for founding Essaray Hockey comes from my experience watching the sport that gave me opportunities all around the world begin to lose its true purpose. I believe hockey is one of the greatest teachers in life—teamwork, accountability, resilience, communication, humility, work ethic, and delayed gratification—all traits of highly successful people in sport and beyond.

The pressure to be “elite” at 8 years old, parents not allowing their children to fail without stepping in, young people struggling to effectively communicate with adults, and early specialization in sports are all signs of a broken system (and it’s not limited to youth hockey).

My hope for Essaray Hockey Camp and future offerings is to give kids the opportunity to make mistakes, learn to communicate, take on leadership roles, avoid instant gratification, and find enjoyment in the process rather than just the outcome. I want them to spend less time on screens, more time being physically active, and to remember that hockey is supposed to be fun.
